A Mother’s Intervention: Getting My Marriage Back on Track

I never planned to become my wife Ruby’s full-time helper just because I worked from home. Still, that’s what happened for three years. Taking care of kids, doing chores around the house, and working full-time were all hard for me until my mother stepped in and changed everything.

At first, Ruby and I shared duties after we got married. But things changed after the birth of our twin boys and her return to work. I thought it would only be brief, so I took on babysitting, cooking, and cleaning. But as time went on, Ruby started to treat me like a maid.

I was upset, tired, and felt like I was being ignored. No one listened to us when we talked about rebalancing our duties. Ruby thought that since I worked from home, I had time for everything.

The turning point came when my mom showed up out of the blue and found me managing work, laundry, and dinner. When she saw how tired I was, she asked what Ruby had done. When I told Mom about my problems, her face became determined.

She called Ruby out of the blue to tell her I needed a break and would be at a spa with friends over the weekend. Ruby was left to take care of everything by herself.

The spa weekend made me feel free. After years of stress, I was able to relax for the first time in years. At the same time, Ruby was dealing with the huge amount of work she had given me.

When I got back, Ruby was waiting for me, sorry and tired. She admitted that she didn’t know how much work I had and offered to make changes, such as cutting her work hours.

In the weeks that followed, Ruby kept her promises. We started to work together, which made our marriage more balanced. I learned it’s okay to need help and a good attitude.

We got back together as partners and worked toward unity, even though there were still problems.
