The pretty and smart young woman Danielle Grobber always got what she wanted. Her rich father gave her lots of nice things, and she didn’t appreciate how kind he was.

Danielle talked her dad into taking her shopping before they went on vacation to the Caribbean. She walked to a nearby park after lunch and ate a burger and fries while texting her friends. When she was done, she threw her trash on a bench without thinking.

“Excuse me, miss!” a soft voice said as she was leaving. “Please take out your trash.” The speaker, Mr. Terence, an old cleaner, swept the yard path. Danielle was shocked and cockyly replied, “People clean up for me.” “Isn’t that your job?”

Jack Grobber, her angry father, showed up. He yelled, “How dare you make this man look bad!” “Apologize to Mr. Terence, Danielle.” Her fake apology made Jack even more angry.

In order to teach Danielle a lesson, Jack sent Mr. Terence on her planned holiday while she stayed home and did his work. Danielle was shocked: sweeping, picking up trash, and cleaning toilets? “Either you do his job or I’ll take away your allowance and car,” her dad said.

Danielle put on a janitor’s outfit on Monday morning, even though she was tired from the day before. Her nails were broken and her hands were red and sore from being caressed. Danielle was very good at her job by the time Mr. Terence got back from the Bahamas.

Danielle changed because of this event. She learned to value hard work and being humble, and to respect other people. Jack’s tough love had finally taught her something very important.
