Renowned teen idol Robby Benson recently celebrated his 67th birthday, and he attributes his longevity to his loving wife of 40 years, Karla DeVito. Benson has had a storied career, starring in films like “Ice Castles” and voicing the Beast in “Beauty and the Beast.” However, his most significant role has been fighting for his life amidst numerous health struggles.

Benson’s health issues began with a heart murmur diagnosis in his teenage years. He underwent open-heart surgery at 28 to replace his aortic valve with a bovine one. Despite living an active life for 13 years, the valve started causing problems, leading to a series of surgeries between 1998 and 2010. The second surgery was botched, causing breathing difficulties and excruciating pain.

Through it all, Karla DeVito has been Benson’s rock. She stood by him even when a “sadistic” nurse callously tied his hands to the bed, ignoring her pleas to untie him. Benson credits DeVito with finding him the best doctors and treatment, saying, “I’m alive because of her.”

Benson’s third surgery revealed that the previous valve had been incorrectly installed, causing his breathing problems. His fourth open-heart surgery in 2010 was successful, and he has since recovered. Benson expresses his gratitude for DeVito’s unwavering support, stating, “When we’re together, we can handle anything.”
