Kris was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville, Texas. As a child, he moved around a lot because his father was in the service. Kris’s mobile family life didn’t stop him from falling in love with country music. He wrote his first song, “I Hate Your Ugly Face,” when he was only 11.
From School to Music
The things Kris did well in school were amazing. At age 18, he had two short stories published in Atlantic Monthly. He also graduated from Pomona College with a degree in creative writing. He got there with the help of a Rhodes Scholarship and got his master’s degree in English literature there.
Kris’s true calling, though, was music. He learned to fly helicopters and started a band while in the U.S. Army. In 1965, he left the army to focus on music full-time. Kris moved to Nashville and worked as a night cleaner at Columbia Studios while sending in songs.
The Road Warriors and Legacy
It was Kris, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson who got together to make The Highwaymen. Their first record made it to the top of the country charts in 1985. Kris won a lot of awards, including three Grammys and an award for lifetime success.
Kris talked about his memory loss in 2013, which was later found to be caused by Lyme disease. His condition got better after treatment, and he kept making songs.
