How Karma Made Prom Night a Night to Remember

My hopes of a magical prom night were dashed when I saw that my perfect dress was covered in black paint. I had no idea that karma was waiting to mess up the evil plan and ruin the perfect day that someone else had planned.

In high school, prom was all I could think about when I was 18. I had been saving money for months to buy my beautiful baby blue dress, and my dad was just as excited as I was.

Though, my stepmother Carol had something else in mind. Our relationship was tense because she had always put her own daughter Julia first.

When I woke up the morning of prom, my dress was everywhere. My heart sank when I saw the thick black paint on the fabric. It felt like the world had fallen apart.

Carol’s casual answer showed that she felt guilty. “Perhaps prom wasn’t meant for you,” she said, sounding genuinely bored.

It made my dad very mad when he saw the dress. He asked her, “What’s wrong with you, Carol?” “You’re going to ruin her prom night to force me to attend Julia’s wedding?”

I realized what was really going on: Carol had wrecked my dress to get my dad to skip prom.

Dad didn’t give up. “I’m staying with my daughter,” he said. “And if you can’t handle that, that’s your problem.”

I was crushed and felt helpless. But then Sarah, my best friend, stepped in and came to save the day.

“Bring the dress to my aunt’s house,” Sarah told her. “She sews things.” It will work out.

The dress turned into a beautiful off-the-shoulder piece with the help of Sarah’s aunt’s magic. I was king or queen.

As we were getting ready to go to prom, Carol called, upset. Julia’s wedding was going to fail, and she needed my dad right away.

Karma had taken care of things, so I smiled. “He’s with me, Carol,” I told her. “Like he promised.”

When I was at prom with my friends and my dad’s support, I learned that karma can help you out.

I danced all night because I was thankful for the people who cared about me and for the lesson that karma teaches: what you put out will come back to you.
