The Hidden History of a Farm

Share

When I read Grandma’s will, I thought it was clear that I would get her farm, but my cousin Felicity would get it instead. I got a mysterious letter that told me I could stay on the land. I set out on a journey to recover my family’s history because I was determined to find the truth.

As the lawyer read the will, his words hit close to home. Felicity, who saw the farm as just a thing, was now in charge of what would happen to it. I felt lied to.

The letter from Grandma gave me hope:

“Dear Diana,

Now is your chance to show what you can do. Felicity has my will, but you are welcome to stay. While you’re here, the farm can’t be sold. Wait three months, and the second part of my will will show itself.

“Love, Mom”

How did Grandma test my promise? Did she doubt me?

Felicity’s offer to buy me out made me even more determined. This farm was more than just land; it was the heart and soul of our family.

I left the city for the farm, where the daily tasks were hard and tiring. I got up early every morning to feed the animals and take care of the fields. My friend Mr. Harris, who was kind, became my light.

To teach me about farming, he would say, “A good fence makes a happy farm.”

But bad things happened when the home caught on fire. Felicity thought it was a good time to sell, but I wasn’t going to give up.

“I’m not leaving,” I said, becoming more determined.

The next few weeks were hard, but with Mr. Harris’s help, I kept going. The animals and the land became my friends and my mission.

The day had finally come to read the second part of the will. Felicity’s pride turned to shock when the lawyer told her what Grandma really wanted:

“The farm belongs to the one who genuinely cares for it.”

Felicity’s attempt to set the house on fire was caught on tape, and the lawyer said I was the true owner.

As I took care of the land, I could feel Grandma all around me. It was my job to protect her memory.

Now that the farm was safe, I went to Mr. Harris, who was more than just a friend.

He asked with bright eyes, “How about that dinner you promised?”

As I smiled, I welcomed a new day. “I think I’m ready now,” I said.
