The Con Artist’s Comeuppance: A Story of Lies and Punishment

Frank, my sneaky father-in-law, knew how to take advantage of people who were offering free stuff. But he ran out of luck at a fancy restaurant, where karma beat him up badly.

Frank had spent years getting better at taking advantage of people to get what he wanted, often at their cost. I had seen him do bad things, but I never thought he’d have to deal with the results.

That terrible night, Frank asked my husband Ethan and me to go to a fancy restaurant with him. As we looked over the menu, I could tell Frank was planning something.

In the middle of the meal, he sneakily took a hair off my head and put it on his plate. He had ordered the expensive lobster. His plan was to act like he was disgusted and then ask for a free meal.

But fate had other ideas.

A worker who recognized Frank from a previous scam told the manager about Frank, who was then confronted by the manager. He spoke in a strong voice, “Sir, we think you put the hair in the dish yourself.”

When the boss told Frank to leave, his face went from shocked to angry. The restaurant would not stand for people trying to hurt their reputation, and they would share his information with other high-end restaurants.

Frank’s face went white as he realized what he had done. He was finally caught for his shady behavior.

Ethan and I looked at each other, happy that Frank was no longer a con artist. The once-proud con artist slunk off, having lost.

What I Learned:

Even though karma is gentle, it’s always looking out for you.

Being dishonest may get you short-term gains, but it always costs you in the long run.

When dishonest activities are caught, the results can be very bad.

After being embarrassed, Frank learned a lesson. He might figure out that cheating his way through life costs him. I and Ethan couldn’t help but smile because we knew that justice had been done.

What do you think? Did karma strike at the right time, or did Frank get away with it? Say what you think.
