In 2012, Aimee Copeland was a 24-year-old graduate student at the University of Georgia, eagerly awaiting graduation. To celebrate, she and her friends decided to spend some time at a small lake, enjoying the thrill of ziplining over the water.
Aimee couldn’t have known that this adventurous outing would change her life forever. Typically, a zipline is a safe and exhilarating experience, but when it was Aimee’s turn, the cable snapped, and she plummeted towards a cliff, resulting in the loss of her leg.
The ordeal didn’t end there. At the hospital, doctors discovered that the wound from her fall had been infected with Aeromonas hydrophila, a bacteria that causes a severe condition known as necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease.
Aimee underwent 11 surgeries and faced a grueling rehabilitation process. Despite these challenges, she emerged as a survivor, though she had to have both her hands and legs amputated.
With incredible resilience, Aimee adapted to her new reality. Four years after the accident, a photo of Aimee proudly wearing a bikini on the beach went viral, inspiring thousands. In the photo, she confidently showed her scars and amputated limbs, embodying strength and self-acceptance.
She shared: “It has taken me a long time to become comfortable with and accept my new body. We are ALL made with imperfections, and there is so much beauty in our flaws. The scars and skin grafting build character! It’s not about what you have — what you do with what you have is what really counts.”
Today, in 2023, Aimee Copeland is a dedicated advocate for amputee and disability rights. She inspires many through her public speaking and social media presence. Alongside her advocacy, Aimee is pursuing a PhD in psychology at the University of West Georgia.
