A Family’s Care: Finding a Con Artist

Share

I had been looking forward for weeks to telling my parents about my boyfriend, Kevin. That was until my dad locked Kevin in the basement and called the cops. That turned our nice family dinner into a crazy night. I couldn’t believe what had just happened and had no idea what had happened.

I could feel a strange tension in the air when we got to my parents’ place. When my dad saw Kevin, his face went from being friendly to being suspicious. We sat down for dinner anyway, even though it was awkward, but my dad’s behaviour got worse.

After dinner, my dad asked Kevin to show him around the house. The basement was the first room they went to. I went after them, but my dad stopped me at the door and said, “Honey, stay here.” We’ll be back soon.” After a short time, I heard a loud noise and the door slammed shut. “Call the police!” my dad yelled. He’s not the person you think he is!”

Even though I was shocked, I called 911 to try to figure out what was going on. My mom ran up, her face full of fear and confusion. As we stood there, waiting for the cops, things got worse.

Kevin was already out of the house through the basement window when the cops arrived. Yet, I found his exercise band, which tracked him with GPS. The cops were eager to track his phone after seeing it.

While we waited with bated breath, the cops planned the search. It led them to an old building on the edge of town, where they caught Kevin in the end. I was angry, hurt, and relieved at the same time.

We found out at the police station that Kevin was the con artist who had ripped off the daughter of my dad’s business partner. I was grateful that my dad had kept me from making a big mistake. We were stronger because of what my family had been through.

Because of what happened, I’m more careful now and always trust my gut. I was thankful that my family loved and looked out for me, and I promised myself that I would never take that for granted again.

There was a good lesson we learnt: you can’t be sure of people, and being alert is the best way to keep our family safe.
