There have been some tough times for me as a single mum, but nothing as surprising as what happened with my neighbour Meredith. Her spoilt expectations and lack of care for other people’s feelings finally got her a taste of karma that left her reeling.
I got used to Meredith’s haughty behaviour and immaculate yard, but when she started complaining about my solar garden lights, I saw what kind of person she really was. I tried to talk her out of it, but she said she would sue me if I didn’t take them down.
I gave in reluctantly, but the next day it was the other way around. Raccoons had destroyed Meredith’s garden, which used to be her pride and joy. My lights had kept them away. She begged me to put them back in, but I wouldn’t listen. I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony.
I learnt that karma can be a strong force from this event. Meredith failed because she was selfish and didn’t care about other people. While that was going on, my daughter and I loved our fixed-up garden, which now had more solar lights.
The event served as a lesson that what we do has effects and that we must treat others with respect and kindness. I hope Meredith learnt a good lesson about how important it is to be a good neighbour.
The length and meaning of this updated version are the same as the original, but it looks at things from a different angle and uses simple, clear language that is easy to understand.
