I had no idea that a flight to see my grandparents would bring me together with someone who would become very important to me. Of course, that’s what happened when I met Elliot, a young boy, on a plane.
As I took my seat, I saw Elliot sitting next to me. He looked nervous and alone. I soon found out that he was travelling by himself. His mother had written a note about his autism and asked people to be patient and kind.
Since the note made me feel good, I called his mom to let her know I was here for him. I learnt more about Elliot’s life and the problems his mother had as a single parent as we talked.
I learnt more about Elliot as the flight went on, and we became closer as we talked about things we had in common. His strength and courage amazed me, and I knew I wanted to be a part of his life.
When we got off the plane, I met Diane, Elliot’s mum, and we got along right away. After going out on dates for two years, we got married. A new family joined my life when I married Elliot.
Now that I think about it, the letter and the $10 bill were more than just a nice thing to do. They were a sign of the grand trip that was to come. That chance meeting on the plane changed my life for good, and I’m always thankful for it.
