Diplomatic Storm Brews Over US Second Lady’s Greenland Visit

What was meant to be a celebration of Greenlandic culture has turned into a diplomatic flashpoint after the island’s prime minister blasted Usha Vance’s upcoming trip as “highly aggressive.” The visit, which includes stops at historic sites and the national dogsled competition, comes amid renewed U.S. interest in acquiring the strategic territory.

Prime Minister Múte B. Egede’s anger stems from recent comments by Vice President JD Vance questioning Denmark’s stewardship of Greenland. Combined with the inclusion of National Security Advisor Mike Waltz in the delegation, many in Greenland see this as more than a cultural exchange. “They’re here to assert control,” Egede warned in a local interview.

The tension recalls 2019 when then-President Trump famously sought to purchase Greenland. With his allies now making high-profile visits and his son having recently promoted annexation, Greenlandic leaders fear a renewed push. “The pressure has reached unacceptable levels,” Egede stated, calling for international support to protect Greenland’s autonomy.

As the U.S. delegation prepares to enjoy Greenland’s famous hospitality, the warm welcome may be cooled by growing political mistrust.
