Paul and Rebecca Callaghan’s journey as parents has been marked by challenges most families never face. Their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born prematurely with a rare combination of health conditions that have shaped her life in profound ways.
At birth, Matilda’s face was covered in dark blue and red marks. Doctors initially thought these were bruises, but they soon discovered she had Trachea Oesophageal Fistula (TOF) and Sturge Weber Syndrome. This neurological disorder causes distinctive birthmarks and can lead to glaucoma, seizures, and learning disabilities.
To manage her condition, Matilda undergoes regular laser treatments, which leave temporary polka dot marks on her face. These treatments are essential to prevent the birthmarks from spreading and affecting her brain or other organs.
When the Callaghans take Matilda out in public, they often encounter stares and hurtful assumptions from strangers who mistake her marks for signs of abuse. “They just see what’s in front of them and jump to hurtful conclusions,” says Paul. “I wish they could see past the birthmark and see what a wonderful little angel she is.”
Despite the challenges, Matilda’s parents are determined to give her the best life possible. They share her story to raise awareness and encourage others to look beyond appearances.
