During a recent address to Congress, Trump spoke about various global issues, including peace efforts involving Russia and Ukraine. However, it was his comments about Greenland that sparked controversy. “If you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” Trump said, highlighting Greenland’s strategic importance for global security.
Trump went on to assert that the U.S. would acquire Greenland “one way or the other,” promising prosperity and protection for its people. “We will keep you safe,” he said. “And together, we’ll take Greenland to new heights you never would have imagined.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, responded swiftly and decisively. In a 10-word statement, he declared, “We don’t want to be Americans. We own Greenland.” Egede emphasized that the people of Greenland value their identity and autonomy. “We want to be Greenlanders, not Americans or Danes,” he said.
Greenland has been part of the Danish Kingdom for centuries, and its leaders have consistently asserted their right to self-determination. Egede made it clear that the territory is not for sale or seizure. “It is up to us to determine our future,” he stated.
