Jo Ann Ussery’s journey from tragedy to triumph is nothing short of inspiring. After losing her home in 1993, Ussery faced financial challenges and the daunting task of finding a new place to live. Instead of settling for a traditional house, she took a bold step and transformed a retired Boeing 727 into a stunning home.
The idea came from her brother-in-law, Bob, who suggested living in an airplane. Ussery visited a decommissioned Boeing 727 and was immediately captivated. For just $2,000, including shipping, she purchased the plane and named it “Little Trump,” inspired by Donald Trump’s private jet.
Over the next few years, Ussery worked tirelessly to convert the 1,500-square-foot aircraft into a comfortable living space. She spent under 30,000(around60,000 today) on the project, which included new flooring, improved insulation, and creative storage solutions. The plane, positioned on her property with its nose facing a lake, offered stunning views and plenty of natural light.
The result was a three-bedroom home with a cozy living area, a fully equipped kitchen, a laundry room, and a luxurious master bathroom in the cockpit. Ussery even added a soaking tub to take advantage of the breathtaking lake views.
From 1995 to 1999, Ussery and her children lived in their unique home, enjoying the comforts of their one-of-a-kind space. Eventually, she turned the plane into a museum to share her creation with the public. Sadly, during a move, the plane slipped off its carriage and was destroyed.
Though the plane is no longer standing, Ussery’s story remains a testament to the power of creativity and determination.
