This year, Kendrick Lamar, widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of his generation, will take the stage as the main act.
Lamar previously appeared during the 2022 halftime show alongside Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, but this time, he’s the star. Apple Music’s teaser, released in September 2024, showed Lamar walking across a football field and joking, “This field a lot bigger than what it looks.” The teaser also revealed that SZA would join him, setting the stage for a memorable performance.
While many fans are excited, others have expressed disappointment. Some feel rap has been overrepresented at the Super Bowl, with one commenter saying, “I’m tired of rap at the Super Bowl. It’s the lowest denominator of music.” Others questioned Lamar’s ability to deliver an engaging live performance, with one fan noting, “I love Kendrick, but his live shows aren’t the most thrilling.”
The announcement also sparked disappointment from Louisiana native Lil Wayne, who many expected to headline in his home state. In a heartfelt Instagram video, Wayne shared his feelings, saying, “It hurt… I thought there was nothing better than that spot and that stage in my city.”
Lamar, known for keeping a low profile, hasn’t directly addressed the criticism, but his latest album, GNX, seems to hint at the controversy. A line from the song “Wacced Out Murals” appears to reference Wayne’s disappointment, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming show.
