Former President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship for some immigrants has been blocked by U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman. The injunction ensures the order cannot take effect until higher courts rule on its legality.
Trump’s order targeted children born to undocumented immigrants and certain legal residents, arguing they should not automatically receive U.S. citizenship. However, Judge Boardman ruled that the order conflicts with the 14th Amendment and a Supreme Court precedent from 1898 that protects birthright citizenship.
The lawsuit was filed by civil rights groups and five pregnant women, who claimed the order would unfairly deny their children citizenship. Judge Boardman emphasized that no court has ever supported Trump’s interpretation of the law, making the order unconstitutional.
The case has deepened the political divide, with Democratic attorneys general challenging the order and Republican officials backing it. The issue is now set to move to higher courts for further review.
