Melania Trump has shared the story of how she first met Donald Trump and what initially drew her to him. In her memoir, Melania, published in October of last year, she detailed their first encounter in 1998, which took place at the Kit Kat Klub in New York City during Fashion Week.
At the time, Melania was a Slovenian model who had recently moved to the U.S. to advance her career. Donald Trump, who had just finalized his divorce from his second wife, Marla Maples, was at the club with another woman. Despite being on a date, Trump approached Melania and asked for her phone number. However, she declined and instead asked for his number, demonstrating her self-assuredness.
A few days later, Melania called Trump, and their first date took place at his home in Bedford, New York. She recalled being captivated by his charm and relaxed demeanor. “From the very beginning, I was drawn to him,” she wrote in her memoir.
In a 2016 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Melania recounted the story, explaining how she insisted on taking Trump’s number instead of giving hers. She even joked about whether it was a business number, to which Trump responded by providing all of his contact details. His energy and vitality left a lasting impression on her.
The couple’s relationship grew, and Trump proposed at the Met Gala in 2004. They married the following year at his Mar-a-Lago estate and welcomed their son, Barron, in 2006. Throughout her time in the public eye, Melania has emphasized her independence and individuality, stating in a FOX News interview, “I’m standing on my own two feet, independent, with my own thoughts and my own ‘yes’ and ‘no.’”
