Going against the grain: a mom’s journey to raise a son who can take care of himself

We tend to follow standard rules about what jobs are appropriate for boys and girls in today’s society. One mother from Michigan, on the other hand, is going against these rules and teaching her son important life lessons in the process.

Some people didn’t like Nicole Boulogne’s pictures of her 7-year-old son cooking and cleaning the house. She is a single mother of two. Many people have questioned how she raises her boys because they think boys shouldn’t have to do housework. Nicole is not discouraged, though, because she knows how important it is to teach her kids to be independent and able to take care of themselves.

Because Nicole is a single mum, she does everything around the house. But she also thinks her kids should learn how to do things on their own. It’s already easy for her older child to cook, do garden work and wash dishes. When her younger child gets bigger, she plans to teach him the same things.

Nicole gave a thoughtful answer when asked why she was teaching her son these skills. “I’m teaching my son how to cook and do housework because these tasks aren’t exclusive to women,” she said. “He might have to learn how to cook and do laundry on his own one day.” You never know when he might need to help with jobs around the house when he has his own family or want to impress a date with a home-cooked meal.

Nicole’s way of parenting is not only sensible, but it’s also based on research. Research has shown that getting kids to help around the house helps them learn important life skills like how to be responsible, take risks, and set goals.

Nicole wrote this strong message to other parents: “Remember, a man who thinks he shouldn’t have to cook or do housework was once a child who was never taught any better.”

Nicole’s determination to teach her son to be independent and able to take care of himself is truly inspiring. She’s making society more fair and setting him up for success by teaching him useful life skills and questioning traditional norms.
