Benjamin Bruce had always looked out for his daughter Emily’s well-being as a single parent. After Emily’s mother died, Ben became both parents to her and did his best to meet all of her needs. But when Emily was a teenager, she started to have her own hobbies and problems. One of these was her hair.
Ben didn’t know how to take care of his daughter’s long hair, so he would brush it himself. But sometimes his rough touch would hurt her. No matter how hard he tried, Emily’s hair was still a problem for both of them. Things changed when Mrs. Flynn, Emily’s teacher, started sending Ben notes for being late. Ben was worried, so he called Emily’s teacher to find out why she was late.
Mrs. Flynn told Ben that Emily had been getting off the bus late, which made him more worried. The next day, he chose to follow the bus to find out what was taking so long. He didn’t expect to find what he did. Ben found out that Emily’s bus driver, Madeline, had been helping her with her hair every morning before school, which wasn’t something bad.
Madeline, who had died from cancer, took it upon herself to watch Emily and the other kids on her bus route. Ben was moved by Madeline’s kindness and thankful that she helped him. He saw that he had forgotten to meet some of Emily’s emotional needs because he was so focused on being a good provider.
Ben learnt an important lesson about the value of society and kindness from his experience with Madeline. It taught him that sometimes, a stranger’s kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. From then on, Ben made sure to understand and meet Emily’s needs more, and he was always thankful to Madeline for being so kind to her.
