Lily, I’m 41 years old and just got divorced after 20 years. When I was having a hard time finding love again, I joined a dating site and met Juan, a nice guy from Mexico. We got along right away, and he asked me to come over.
Even though I was hesitant at first, I chose to surprise him. Even though the flight was scary, I was motivated. I took a cab to his small town when I got there.
My worry grew as I got closer to Juan’s flat. He was shocked and glad to see me. The whole night we talked and laughed.
But the next morning, a hard truth hit them. I woke up in the street, lost and confused. They took my phone and money.
As I tried to talk to people walking by, panic set in. Miguel, a nice stranger, came up to me and offered to help. He fed me, took me to his restaurant, and gave me clean clothes.
When I was feeling better, I saw Juan with another woman. I told Miguel because I was very angry. We came up with a plan together.
I borrowed a waitress outfit and got Juan’s phone. Juan was caught after Miguel called the cops.
Miguel’s help and kindness made me strong. I understood there are still good people in the world and I wasn’t the only one. I learnt to trust my gut and ask for help when I need it after this.
I went home thankful for Miguel’s kindness and ready to start over.
