Nathan and Dani met in high school and fell in love. After dating for a few years, they got married. But their happiness didn’t last long. Nathan changed, and he started to criticise Dani more and more, after only two years of marriage.
He would often make fun of how she looked and tell her she had “let herself go” and needed to care about how she looked more. Nathan said Dani wasn’t a good mother because she worked too much from home and didn’t spend enough time with their daughter Ellie, even though he was a great dad to Ellie.
Dani did everything she could to make Nathan happy, but nothing worked. As things in their marriage got worse, Dani realised she wasn’t strong enough to fight for something that was only in Nathan’s mind.
When Nathan told Dani he had a job opening in a different city, she decided to move with him, thinking that the move would make their marriage better. Things did not get better, though. Ellie began coming home from school sad, and Dani found her crying in her room one day.
Ellie told the class that Miss Allen, her teacher, had told her that she would be a better mother than Dani. Nathan’s cheating was found out, and Dani’s whole world fell apart. Nathan told Dani that he had been having an affair with Miss Allen and another woman from the town they used to live in that night.
The news meant the end of their marriage. Dani moved to a new house, filed for divorce, and moved Ellie to a different school. Nathan could visit his daughter whenever he wanted, but Dani was finally free from the bad marriage that was making her feel trapped.
