An Accident That Made Things Different

A normal trip to the grocery store became the most important event in my life. As I fought to pay for a simple bun, a rude teller said hurtful things that cut deep. But in a surprise turn of events, karma stepped in and a nice stranger paid for my item out of kindness.

His name was John, and as we talked, I learned that we had both been through hard times and come out on the other side. He told her that he was worried that his girls, Sarah and Emily, were having trouble with chemistry.

John asked me if I could help teach his children, and I said yes. It gave me a new sense of purpose and joy to start teaching them. By sharing what I knew and how I did things, I saw them grow and do well. I knew it was my second chance to make a difference, and I was ready to take it.

When I got back to the store, I was proud to wear my old teacher clothes. I was shocked to see the same cashier who had put me down earlier as I walked up to the checkout line. In this case, though, her mood had changed. I won a small battle, but it taught me that people can change.

As I thought about my trip, I understood how important it is to be kind and understanding. I made sure to tell Sarah and Emily my story to stress how important it is to look past what you see. I could tell they were listening with seriousness because I could see it in their eyes.

I promised myself that by teaching, I would instill ideals that went beyond what people saw. It’s important to remember that everyone has a story and that being kind can make a difference. I knew I had been given a rare gift when I saw Sarah and Emily: the chance to change things one lesson at a time.
