Having a child is a life-changing event that can bring a lot of happiness and satisfaction. Many women have their first child in their 20s or 30s, but some may choose to have a family later in life. In 2006, Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara made news when she gave birth to twin boys. She was 66 years old at the time.
People were shocked, angry, and impressed by Maria’s choice to have a child at a very old age. When she told her family she was pregnant, they were shocked, and some even called her selfish. Maria was set on her choice, though, because she thought every woman should be able to decide when to have a child.
It wasn’t easy for Maria to become a mother. She went to a clinic in California for IVF treatment and is said to have lied about her age, telling doctors she was 55. Once Maria had sold her house to pay for the treatment, she finally got pregnant with twins.
Maria gave birth to healthy twin boys, Christian and Pau, on December 29, 2006. Doctors and nurses closely watched her during her pregnancy and birth. There were some complications, but neither baby had any big problems.
Maria didn’t have much time with her boys, which was sad. She was told she had ovarian cancer only six months after giving birth. Maria loved her kids very much even though she was sick, and her family helped take care of them.
Maria died in 2009, and her twin boys, who were only two years old at the time, were left behind. One thing that will always remember her is her children, who are now doing well and being cared for by Maria’s family.
Maria’s story makes us think about whether or not women should be able to choose when to have children. Some people may not agree with her choice to become a mother at age 66, but others see her as a leader who didn’t let social norms control her choices.
