When I bought coffee for a homeless man, I had no idea that it would start a chain of events that would change my life forever. I was waiting at the airport for my flight to meet Kathy’s parents for the first time. It was a normal morning.
I was sitting in a small coffee shop when I saw a messy man walk in and ask people for extra change. I was surprised by how nice and humble he was when he came up to me. It was his birthday, so he asked for money to buy a cup of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. I chose to buy him coffee and even added a slice of cake to the order because of something about him that spoke to me.
He told me that he had lost everything—his home, his job, and his family—as soon as we sat down. I was touched by how honest and strong he was. I wished him a happy birthday and gave him $100 before we left.
I had no idea that our meeting would be just the start. After a few hours, I was shocked to see the same man walking towards me while I was getting on my flight. He was now wearing a sharp suit. He introduced himself as David, Kathy’s dad, and said that the first time we met was just a test to see what kind of person I was.
I was shocked and didn’t know what to think about what was going on. David told me he was interested in seeing how I would treat a stranger, especially one who didn’t seem to have anything to give. He liked how kind and generous I was, so he agreed to let me marry his daughter.
The events of the day were still fresh in my mind when we got to Kathy’s folks’ house. As we ate dinner, I realised I wasn’t just meeting Kathy’s parents; I was also being welcomed into a family that valued love, kindness, and warmth.
