Finding Out the Truth: How One Family Learned to Forgive and Move On

Share

A once-a-week tradition had become a regular part of our family life. Mike, my husband, would take Ava and Ben to see their grandma every Saturday. I thought that. I didn’t start to figure out a web of lies and secrets that would change our family forever until my daughter Ava sent me a coded message.

Something didn’t feel right as I watched Mike and the kids get in the car and drive off. I kept thinking about what Ava said: “Grandma is just a secret code.” I became interested in what they were doing and chose to follow them to find out what was going on.

What I learned would make me lose faith in Mike and put our marriage at risk. Heather and Lily, Mike’s secret daughter from a past relationship, were the woman and girl I saw at the park. When I found out the truth, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was hurt, angry, and confused.

When I talked to Mike about it, he broke down and told me everything. He told me the secret years ago because he was afraid of how I would respond and what that might mean for our family. I loved Mike so much, but I was so mad that he lied to me.

After Mike’s cheating, the next few days were a blur of feelings, but I finally understood that this wasn’t just about him. It was also about a little girl who deserved to know her dad and have a family. I chose to spend time with Hannah and Lily. As we talked, I saw the good in them and the love they had for each other.

It wasn’t easy for our family to forgive and heal, but it has been life-changing. We are still having ups and downs, but we are working together to get back on track and trust each other. We now go to the park every Saturday as a big, happy family.

Turns and twists happen all the time in life, and sometimes the things we keep hidden hurt the people we love the most. But if we are honest, willing to accept, and ready to work through the hard times, we can get through anything and come out stronger, smarter, and more loving.
