Richard and I have been married for three years, and we love each other very much. One thing, though, has been driving me crazy: my mother-in-law Monica is always looking around.
Three months ago, Monica left a dinner party to go to the toilet. That was the start of it. She didn’t use the guest bathroom downstairs; instead, she went to our master bedroom upstairs. It seemed odd to me, but I didn’t think much of it.
But it happened again after a month. I followed her upstairs this time and caught her looking through our personal things. While I was mad, I tried to cool down and tell Richard what was going on.
When Monica came over for Christmas dinner, that was the last straw. Richard didn’t believe me when I told him she would try to spy on us again. So, I chose to do something very bad.
And I set a trap for Monica. I put glitter on the doorknob to our bedroom. A sparkle bag that was empty was sitting on the shelf above the door. When Monica opened the door, the bag would fall and cover her in glitter.
I knew it was dangerous, but I had to do it because I was desperate. It worked. Nicole screamed loudly when she opened the door and saw glitter all over her.
The rest of the night was a mess. Monica and Richard were both very angry with me. But I didn’t back down. I told Monica she didn’t have permission to look through our stuff, and I told Richard he needed to stand up to his mom.
Monica and her daughter Sally finally stormed out of the house, leaving a trail of glitter behind them. It was an exciting end to a thrilling evening, but I was glad it was over.
I think I may have gone too far with the shiny trap now that I look back. But I was weak and thought I had no other choice. It’s just my hope that Monica has learnt her lesson and will now be more careful about our privacy.
