The Big Birthday Meal That Made Things Different

It took me weeks to plan the best birthday dinner for my husband Todd, who is 35 years old. I wanted him to have a wonderful night that he would never forget. I thought he had other plans, but I was wrong.

Todd told the guests that he was going to leave to watch the game with his friends at a bar just as they were about to arrive. I was shocked and thought someone had punched me in the gut. He didn’t seem to care about any of my work, love, or care.

I felt bad about myself and ashamed. What did he do to me? Then something inside me broke. I grasped that I did not need to lie down for this. I could step in and tell Todd that what he was doing was wrong.

So, I made up my mind. I drove to the pub where Todd was watching the game after putting the food away. I set up the food and began giving it to the other people who came in. There was a huge reaction. A lot of people liked both the food and the story behind it.

When Todd saw me serving the food, he was shocked and felt bad about himself. I smiled and told him, “You should have thought of that before you left me.” He tried to say sorry.

The rest of the night was hard to remember. Todd’s family and friends were also having a good time with the food and laughing. But Todd himself was calm and quiet. He was aware that he had erred and was determined to fix it.

Todd is different now than he was that night, two weeks ago. He’s been nicer and more helpful, and he even said sorry for how he behaved.

If you’re a woman who is sick of being ignored, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. Show your partner or husband that you won’t put up with it by being rude. You should expect better and deserve better.
