My life looked great: I had a good job, enough money, and a loving husband. That night, though, a panicked call from my lawyer told me the terrible truth about my husband Matt and his mother Linda.
I met Matt on a camping trip eight years ago, and I was immediately drawn to his happy smile. We became friends and then got married after three years. But as our relationship went on, Matt’s controlling behaviour and over-reliance on his mother became clear.
Linda put me down all the time, which made me feel like I wasn’t good enough for her boy. Matt always agreed with her and didn’t care about my worries. He also had bad money habits, like taking out a lot of “loans” and spending a lot of money on his mother.
There was nothing bad about the night that everything changed. Matt asked me to bring his mother food because she was sick. Sarah, my lawyer, called and yelled, “Return home RIGHT NOW!” She told me that Matt and Linda were planning to change the title of our house to her name.
When I got home, Matt, Linda, and a real estate agent were all done with the papers. Sarah stepped in and told everyone about their plan to get a divorce and marry Matt to someone else. As I talked to Matt about his deception, the room spun.
I got back in charge of my life with Sarah’s help as I filed for divorce. Matt left with almost nothing, but I got a new home, dear friends, and an important lesson: I should trust my gut and put my own worth first.
