After having Sophie, Lily, and Grace, Emily’s happiness didn’t last long. Her husband Jack left them because he thought that the babies would bring bad luck, which was what a fortune reader said would happen.
The room in the hospital where Emily gave birth was happy and excited. But Jack’s mood changed when he saw the babies. He turned pale and cold, and he wouldn’t look at Emily.
“Emily, I don’t think we can keep them,” Jack said in a scared voice. The woman my mum went to told her fortune. She told him they would cause trouble and death.
Wow, Emily was shocked. “You believe some absurd prediction over your own family?” she asked me.
The look on Jack’s face turned worried. “My mom’s fortune teller has never been wrong.” Emily got more angry, but Jack already made up his mind. Emily was very sad when he left.
As the days went into weeks, Emily found it hard to take care of the triplets by herself. Beth, Jack’s sister, told him a shocking secret: there was no fortune teller. Jack’s mum made up the story to keep her son under control.
Emily told Jack what she thought, but he wouldn’t believe her. The family was split up because of his mother’s lies.
Emily’s friends and family were there for her as she dealt with being a single mum. The babies were so much fun that they made Jack’s departure seem less important.
A few weeks later, Jack’s mother came to Emily’s door feeling bad about what she had done. She told him, “I was afraid of losing him.”
Emily’s anger went away and was replaced by a determination. “Your fear destroyed our family.”
After a year, Jack came back and begged for forgiveness. Emily didn’t give up. “You left us when we needed you.” “I don’t need you right now.”
Emily felt free when she shut the door. Jack’s absence made her more determined to raise her children by herself.
