The Ultimate Ultimatum: An Unbelievable Beginning from a Father

Share

I thought I was ready for anything, but when my daughter walked into the living room out of the blue, I was shocked. “Dad, I want you to take away my allowance, rent out my room, and get rid of everything I own, including my clothes, TV, stereo, iPhone, iPod, laptop, and jewelry,” she said with a dramatic tone. Don’t own my car, sell it, or give me my key back.

I was shocked and didn’t understand what could have caused such a strong response. Was she leaving her family, going to live in a convent, or giving up on life altogether? The funny part then came.

She didn’t really mean any of those extreme steps. She then told him the real reason for her emotional statement: “Dad, this is my new boyfriend.”

It turned out that presenting her new partner was what made this fake ultimatum happen. Her funny tone was a smart way to get me ready for the chance that she wouldn’t like what I said. Thank goodness I did well on the test, and we were happy to have her boyfriend.

This funny moment made me think of how life’s biggest shocks often have a funny side. My daughter’s creative way of meeting her new boyfriend showed me that love and laughter can win out even in possibly awkward situations.

I learned that day to be ready for the unexpected and to enjoy the fun ways my daughter handles the big events in her life. Also, don’t forget to always have a good sense of fun.
