I’ll never forget the morning of my tests to get into medical school. My alarms had been turned off for some reason when I woke up late. But my brother Jason, who is eight years old, helped me get to the test on time.
Thanks to the death of my mother from cancer, I worked hard for years to become a doctor. I wanted to help other people with the same illness and learn more about it. This test was a big chance for me to take a key step towards my goal.
Setting multiple alarms and leaving my curtains open were all things I did to make sure I wouldn’t fall asleep too early. But I became scared when I woke up at 9:55 a.m. The test was set to begin at 10 a.m.
Linda, my stepmother, didn’t seem to care that I was upset, which made it seem like I wasn’t able to manage my time well. Jason, who saw Linda turn off my alarms, wouldn’t keep quiet, though.
Jason told Linda the truth and stood up for me, which took a lot of courage. Things began to happen because of what he said that would change everything.
Jason called the police, and soon there were two of them at our door. Even though Linda tried to say she wasn’t involved, the police believed Jason and offered to walk me to the test centre.
As we sped to the college with sirens going off, I had a lot of different feelings: thanks to Jason, anger at Linda, and desire to do well. We arrived just in time, and the officers persuaded the proctors to let me take the test.
Thanks to Jason’s bravery and the officers’ kindness, I was able to sit for the test. Hours later, exhausted but relieved, I returned home to find Jason waiting eagerly.
His eyes sparkled with hope as he asked, “Did you do it?” I smiled, nodding in affirmation. “I did, thanks to you.” Jason’s face lit up with pride, and we shared a passionate hug.
The aftermath of that day saw Linda’s departure from our home, a result of her selfish actions. As Jason and I watched her leave, we felt a feeling of relief and justice.
That day, I learned that sometimes, it’s the smallest acts of courage that can change everything. Jason’s unwavering support had saved my dreams, and I would forever be grateful to him.
In that moment, I knew that no matter what life threw our way, Jason and I would face it together, as a team. And with that knowledge, I felt unbeatable.
