The Good, the Bad, and the Mother-in-Law

Mothers-in-law can be unpredictable—sometimes they’re your biggest ally, other times your worst nightmare. These stories capture the highs and lows of these complicated relationships.

One woman’s life fell apart when her husband cheated on her during her pregnancy. But in a surprising twist, her mother-in-law—who had never liked her—stepped up. “What my son did was wrong,” she admitted, bringing food, helping after childbirth, and even giving her a place to live. Sometimes, family isn’t about who you expect—it’s about who stands by you.

Not all tales end well, though. One grandmother told her granddaughter that her mother was a “witch” who trapped her father. Luckily, the child told her parents, who took the money the mother-in-law gave them—and used it to move far away.

Then there was the gardening war. A couple let their in-laws plant on their land, only for their own crops to be sabotaged every year. After three failed seasons, the wife gave up—but her in-laws still didn’t understand why.

Boundary issues are another common struggle. One mother-in-law made a habit of arriving unannounced on weekends, expecting to be waited on. The breaking point came when her daughter-in-law stopped playing host—and made her husband handle his own mother. Suddenly, the visits became much less frequent.

But the most shocking moment? A grandmother who ignored her daughter-in-law’s wishes and cut her grandson’s hair without permission. Some people just refuse to listen.
