The Struggle of a Fiancé to Understand a Secret

Adam and I were going to get married next month. Adam didn’t trust me after visiting my parents and seeing how they lived in a strange way.

Adam seemed at ease during dinner at my parents’ house. However, his uneasiness grew as the night went on. He saw my mum kissing someone else, which showed that their marriage was not secret. Adam told me to call my dad, but my mom explained that their schedule wasn’t normal.

Adam felt lied to and began to doubt our relationship. Having been cheating on his wife before made him wary. I told him I would be there for him, but he needed time alone. We moved to stay with my grandma to try to save our visit.

The stiffness stayed, and Adam’s pain could be felt. My parents said they were sorry, but Adam no longer trusted them. We chose to go to treatment to deal with his trauma and my shame.

Our journey to get better began. Our fears, shame, and the future were talked about. Adam learnt more about himself and my parents’ decisions through therapy. Our love won, and it was stronger and more honest.

I learnt from this that lies can hurt relationships. Being honest is important, no matter how hard it is. Would you lie to protect someone you care about, or would you tell the truth and risk making them angry?
