A Restaurant Experience That Went Viral About Standing Up Against Ageism

I, Everly, still enjoy the good things in life at age 82. My daughter Nancy came into my shop out of the blue and suggested we try a new place in downtown. We were excited to spend time together, so we dressed casually.

We didn’t feel like we belonged with the stylish people when we walked in. The host’s critical look and our server’s fading smile were signs that they didn’t like what we were doing. The waiter told her straight out, “This place might not be right for you.” Your clothes don’t go with the mood here, and you look too old. We were led out by security, which made me feel small.

Nancy’s widely shared Facebook post showed that the restaurant was ageist, which made people very angry. The owner, Mr. Thompson, truly apologised and admitted that his son had made a mistake. He eager to make things right asked us to come back.

When I got back in my nicest silk dress, Mr. Thompson was there to meet me. He said sorry, showing that he really felt bad about what he did. They learnt from this experience to be polite to all customers.

That night, I left a message praising their work. This event made me remember that everyone, no matter their age, deserved respect. There are times when you have to speak up to make this point clear.

The event showed how important it is to understand and include others. I’m thankful that Nancy helped and that Mr. Thompson was willing to learn. People are moved by my story to fight ageism and spread kindness and understanding.

By talking about what happened to me, I hope to promote understanding and togetherness. Respect should be shown to everyone, and I will keep speaking out against discrimination.
