As Halloween fans decorate their homes with scary things, Salena Webb, a mother of four from South Carolina, showed that kindness can shine better than any glowing pumpkin.
Salena put a lot of work into making the detailed graveyard scene in her front yard out of love, but she didn’t hesitate when her neighbour asked her to do something. His old father, who was just recently told he has lung cancer, thought the decorations were scary.
Salesna’s neighbour asked her to take down the coffin because his father often hung out in the shed with his back to her yard. Salena’s empathy kicked in, and she knew how important it was to take down the possibly upsetting decoration.
In a TikTok video that went popular, Salena talked about the event and her choice. She put badminton rackets in place of the coffin and moved the scarier preparations to her backyard. “Kindness is free, and compassion goes a long way,” she said.
@thatsnorthsense My family knows i loveeee Halloween and my decorations took me awhile to make and put up. I had just purshased the skeleton carrying the casket to go along with my graveyard to really set my halloween decor off this year🥴 I was a little sad at first but i thought about the bigger picture. Me removing my casket isnt hurting me at all but it may ease and bring my neighbor a little bit of peace as he adjusts to this news. Kindness is free and compassion goes a long way. Now what to replace it with🥴😩#Thatsnorthsense #dailyvlog #compassionforothers #halloween2023 #loveyourneighborasyourself
The reaction was huge, and many people praised Salena’s kind act. “Being kind doesn’t cost anything.” “Thank you!” said one person. Someone else wrote, “The world needs more people like you!” “May God bless you!” Even though they didn’t speak the same language, Salena’s neighbour thanked them and said, “You’re good people.”
@thatsnorthsense Replying to @JennAngel 🪱🌈🪐☁️🪅💠 maybe some can now understand why they were a little touchy about it and at night theres fog that i have come out from it🤣 so i get it.. #Thatsnorthsense #dailyvlog #compassionforothers #halloween2023 #loveyourneighborasyourself
Even though it’s Halloween, Salena’s act of kindness shows that people can be kind all year long. Because she thought about how her decorations might affect the people around her, she motivated others to spread love and understanding. Being kind in small ways can sometimes make a big difference, as her story shows.
People are still moved by Salena’s video, which goes viral. It’s a powerful lesson that kindness is always appropriate. Kindness can shine better than any light on Halloween, even when everything else is dark and scary.
