After my wife Elizabeth died in a terrible car accident, something strange a fortune teller said at her funeral changed everything: “Her death was no accident.” I set out on a trip to find the shocking truth because I was sad and interested.
My wife and I and our two young girls were shocked when Elizabeth died. I was filled with pain because I couldn’t go to the funeral. But the scary thing the fortune teller said made me angry.
Even though her forecast seemed crazy, it stuck with me. It was at the graveyard that I was looking for comfort. That’s when I saw the mysterious woman again. I was scared by her sharp eyes and disturbing smile, but I was interested in what she had to say.
She gave me a secret message for $20 that said, “Elizabeth won’t rest until justice is done.” I gave them the money even though I wasn’t sure about it. I needed answers badly. She said goodbye with these words: “By this time tomorrow, you’ll see.”
That night, I looked through Elizabeth’s things for hints. An interesting receipt for a hire car caught my eye. Why would she rent a car? I kept thinking about what the fortune teller said.
I called Sarah, Elizabeth’s friend who worked at the garage. She told them that Elizabeth had rented the car for a secret trip to the beach. However, why the secret? Why did her sister Karen give the car back?
The rental company confirmed that Karen was there. My mind was filled with doubt. I went to the cops and told them what I had found. They reopened the case and looked at the hire car. The brakes had been tampered with.
The truth came out like a bad dream. In order to make herself the beneficiary of Elizabeth’s life insurance policy, Karen faked her name on it. Karen was caught, and her confession showed that she planned to kill someone.
I didn’t feel anything in the courtroom as Karen got her life sentence. It was fair, but Elizabeth was already gone. I went to her grave and said in a whisper, “You can rest now.” The gravestone was blessed with a butterfly, which was a powerful sign of peace.
I can still feel what the fortune teller said, but I’m thankful for the truth, even though it hurts. That $20 told me a scary secret and led me in a direction I didn’t expect. In the end, though, it was fair for Elizabeth.
