Rufus, a man who was 50 years old, was used to living a safe but boring life. But it was still unclear how he felt about his sister Hyacinth. Since he married her mother Lilith, they had grown apart.
After a year of silence, Hyacinth asked Rufus to dinner out of the blue. He gladly agreed, hoping that things could be made right. The fancy diner and her happy mood made me think of a fresh start.
Even though Hyacinth was smiling, Rufus could tell she was feeling uneasy as they ordered expensive food. Concerns were made by her tense looks and short answers. When the bill came, Rufus reached for his card, but Hyacinth suddenly left, leaving him speechless.
Rufus paid the price, but he was confused and upset. Soon after, Hyacinth came back with a cake and flowers to tell everyone a big surprise: she was pregnant and Rufus was going to be a grandfather.
The thought of how great this gift was made him cry tears of joy. The kind thing Hyacinth did brought them closer together. As they hugged each other, Rufus said in a whisper, “I’m so happy for you.”
In that moment, years of space between them disappeared. Rufus felt welcome in Hyacinth’s life, and his new job as a grandfather-to-be gave him a sense of purpose.
Rudy asked, “When’s the big day?” as they left the restaurant. “Six months, Grandpa,” Hyacinth said with a smile. You have a lot of time to get ready.
They became closer after the evening took an unexpected turn. No matter their flaws, they were family. It made Rufus’s heart race with joy to start this new journey with Hyacinth and her child.
