One night, George Carson, owner of the famous New York diner The Kettle of Fish, found something shocking. A maid named Consuelo Ruiz was putting food scraps from customers’ plates into a plastic bag. George followed her, wanting to know what she was up to.
He felt very moved by what he found. The scraps were what Consuelo, a single mother, was giving her four kids in an empty factory. George found out that his boss, Colt Farrow, was buying food from his restaurant that was supposed to go to a shelter.
Farrow hired Consuelo for a lot less than what was planned, and he kept the extra money for himself. George challenged him because he was angry that he was being used. Fawn was fired right away.
Then George called Consuelo and offered her a raise in pay, a new job, and a small room in a building that had been used for storage. She no longer had to rely on bits of food because he made sure she got proper food.
Consuelo was so thankful that she asked George why he helped. He told the story of how his grandfather came to America and said that someone had also helped him. Helping people in need is what the real American Dream is all about, and George’s kindness gave people hope.
After that, Consuelo and her kids did very well. George’s selfless act changed people’s lives and showed everyone how much kindness and sensitivity can matter.
