The worst thing that could have happened to Shelby and Jonathan was that their 2-year-old daughter Sophie got very sick. Sophie was first wrongly told she had allergies, but as her condition got worse, a terrible diagnosis became clear: she had T-cell lymphoma.
Sophie was fighting for her life, and her parents saw the paediatric nurses work hard even when they weren’t seen or recognised. This group of heroes is brought to light by Shelby’s touching message.
“I see you,” Shelby writes. “Even though you try to blend in, I can see how caring, kind, and dedicated you are.” You calm my kid’s fears, comfort moms who are crying, and take care of the most helpless patients.
These nurses do many things: they heal, comfort, tell stories, and speak up for their patients. They put their personal lives on hold to care for children who were dying, giving families hope and comfort.
Sophie’s sad story finished on January 4, 2018, but her memory lives on. A lot of people have been moved by Shelby’s words to appreciate the selfless job of paediatric nurses.
“Cancer targets the innocent, but it also reveals the remarkable humanity of those who care for them,” Shelby says. “Let’s honour these unsung heroes and acknowledge their unwavering commitment to healing and comfort.”
