A Strange Gift: Figuring Out What My Father-in-Law Really Means

My husband Josh and I were shocked when a package showed up at our door with no message from the sender. Along with the gift, a note from Josh’s separated father Taylor, there was a beautiful pillow with embroidery on it.

Since our anniversary was coming up, I thought Josh had ordered something extra special. Josh’s face changed when he saw the note, though.

Josh had a difficult history with Taylor because she left him and his mother when Josh was seven years old, so this action made him feel bad.

Taylor’s past of cheating, gambling, and not taking care of his family left deep scars. Josh didn’t want to ask him to our wedding or let him meet our daughter Emily.

Taylor tried to get back in touch with Josh, but Josh was still wary. When the pillow showed up with a strange ticking sound, Josh’s senses took over.

We found a timer in a small box inside the pillow. Josh’s worries grew, but I told him to call Taylor and talk to him about it.

Taylor told us it was just a safe anniversary present, but Josh wasn’t sure. We thought that until we opened the box and saw a check for $100,000.

Stumped, Josh didn’t know what Taylor was up to. Was this a real effort to make things right, or was it just another trick?

Taylor said he was going to die soon and wanted to leave Emily a gift to help pay for her schooling. Even though Josh wasn’t sure, he agreed to meet Taylor at a park nearby.

The conversation was intense, and Taylor said sorry for the mistakes he had made in the past. It was for Emily’s sake that Josh started to forgive.

Josh seemed lighter as we left the park, and I understood that forgiving others can be a gift to ourselves.

The strange pillow brought us full circle, making Josh face his past and Taylor make things right. It’s possible that the strangest actions can lead to healing and forgiveness.
