More than ten years ago, Isabelle and Abby Carlsen were born conjoined at the chest and abdomen, sharing vital organs like the liver, small intestine, and two connected hearts. Their birth at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was a miracle that captivated the world.
As their parents prepared for the delicate surgery to separate them, they faced an agonizing decision. The procedure, which carried a 60% mortality rate at the time, was a high-risk endeavor. On May 12, 2006, a team of 17 doctors performed the 12-hour surgery, successfully separating the twins.
After spending six months in hospitals, Isabelle and Abby began their journey as individual siblings. Today, they are thriving, independent, and academically excelled young girls who enjoy gymnastics and have a strong bond with each other.
In an interview, they humorously remarked, “Every night we look in the mirror, and we’re like, how do people get us mixed up?” Their teacher, Tiffany Moos, described them as fun-loving and friendly, with an occasional sweet gesture of holding hands while walking together.
Their story is a testament to medical excellence and the resilience of the human spirit. Watch the video to hear Isabelle and Abby share their incredible journey.
Let’s celebrate these miracle girls and the surgical team that made their separation possible!
