A chance meeting reveals a web of lies

I had no idea that I would find a secret that would change everything as I drove my cab. Mike, the husband of my friend Jane, got into my cab with a strange woman, which revealed a shocking affair. I had to do my job as a driver, but I also loved Jane very much.

While I was no longer writing, driving gave me a new sense of purpose. The open road and listening to other people’s stories kept me busy. Mike, a man I had met before, got into my taxi and asked me to pick up someone. It didn’t bother me until I saw the girl waiting on the curb.

The way they talked in the backseat made my blood boil. Mike said that Jane was a “old hag” and brag about getting money from her.

I knew what I had to do. I lied about the location and drove back to Jane’s house. When we got there, Jane sat down with Mike and the woman, Nicole.

It was like a script how the scene went. You could feel Jane’s anger and deception. Jane knew Mike was lying when he tried to play down the affair. It made me feel good to know that I had helped her find the truth when she told him to leave.

Jane thanked me for showing her how dishonest Mike really was as I drove away. It occurred to me that the truth can hurt, but it’s important to face it straight on.

In the beginning of my column, I talked about men who cheat by saying they are going on work trips or visiting family.

I knew I had made a difference at that very moment. I told the ugly truth about Mike’s affair and helped a friend who was in trouble. After I finished my paper, I couldn’t help but think about how other people would act in the same situation. Would they ignore the truth, even if it hurt?
