When I pulled into the driveway of my ex-wife Goldie, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. Sarah and Jack, our kids, were sitting out front raised money for a cause they cared about.
I couldn’t say anything about what they were trying to raise money for, though.
I told them they were trying to find a new dad because they thought I was “sick in the head” and couldn’t live with them anymore.
Their sweet faces lit up. When Goldie and I realised that our kids had completely misunderstood our split, we looked at each other in shock.
The whole night, we told them that just because adults can’t live together doesn’t mean they don’t love their kids. We told them that no matter what, we would always be their parents.
While we talked, I couldn’t help but feel bad about what our split had done to our kids. I knew we had made the right choice when I looked at Goldie. We were still a family, but not the same.
We chose to make their fundraising for a bad cause into something good by doing it together. As Goldie and I walked inside to get ice cream, I caught her eye.
We smiled at each other. There was a long way to go, but maybe we’d find a new normal.
