The Vasquez-Garcia household in Maryland hasn’t been the same since that awful day in 2019. Jennifer Vasquez still remembers the moment she learned her husband Kilmar had been sent to El Salvador’s most feared prison due to what authorities later called an “administrative error.”
“What hurts most is our children’s questions,” Jennifer shares. “They don’t understand why Daddy can’t come home.” The family’s ordeal worsened when, despite a Supreme Court ruling that Garcia’s deportation violated US law, El Salvador’s president refused to release him, citing tough anti-crime policies.
US officials have portrayed Garcia as a domestic abuser based on a restraining order, but Jennifer explains it was a precaution after surviving previous abuse. “We worked through it together,” she says. Now she spends her days navigating legal labyrinths while comforting children who miss their father’s embrace, determined to prove her husband belongs home with his family.
