A Close Call: How a Woman Used Online Tips to Evade a Stalker

Share

No one should have to fear being followed in public, but until that changes, women are sharing life-saving advice to help each other stay safe. One woman’s recent experience shows just how effective these tips can be.

After shopping with her husband, the woman stopped at the mall restroom while her husband went to the car. But when she walked in, she saw a man inside—and he turned to stare at her. Suddenly, she recalled a crucial warning she’d read: If you think you’re being followed, never go into a bathroom alone. She immediately left, but the man followed her into the mall.

Heart pounding, she remembered another tip: Duck into an unexpected store to lose a pursuer. She spotted a dollhouse shop and stepped inside—but the man followed her in, still watching.

Now certain of his intentions, she hurried back out and called her husband, announcing loudly, “I’m being followed by the man behind me!” Her husband came running, and the stalker instantly fled. Thanks to safety advice shared online, she avoided what could have been a much worse outcome.
