How a Stray Dog Taught Us About Life

Share

The universe works in mysterious ways. Ours came knocking in the form of a very pregnant, very determined dog at our gate one rainy afternoon. Her condition suggested she was about 63 days along – prime time for canine delivery. The way she looked at us, it was clear she’d chosen our home deliberately to have her puppies.

We learned quickly about dog pregnancy signs: the restlessness, the panting, the nesting behaviors. Converting our seldom-used sunroom into a delivery space, we lined the area with towels and kept the room dim and quiet. Our vet walked us through what to expect – the three stages of labor, potential complications, and how to assist if needed.

When labor began in earnest, time seemed to stop. Each puppy’s arrival was met with quiet cheers as we watched the mother instinctively clean and care for her newborns. In those intense hours, we learned more about trust, compassion and the circle of life than any book could teach. That stray didn’t just bring puppies into the world that day – she brought new perspective into ours.
