In a world where unconventional homes are gaining popularity, Jo Ann Ussery’s story stands out. Long before the trend, she transformed a retired Boeing 727 into a luxurious residence, showcasing her ingenuity and determination.
After losing her home and husband in 1993, Ussery needed a new place to live with her two children. With limited funds, she considered a trailer but soon discovered it wouldn’t be spacious enough. Her air traffic controller brother-in-law suggested living in a plane, and Ussery was intrigued.
She found a Boeing 727 ready for disassembly and fell in love with it. For just $2,000, she purchased the plane and named it “Little Trump” after Donald Trump’s private Boeing 727. Ussery invested less than $30,000 in renovations, carefully preserving the plane’s original features while adding modern comforts.
The 138-foot-long aircraft boasts 76 windows, which didn’t open, but Ussery installed air conditioning to compensate. She retained the single airplane bathroom and overhead bins for storage, adding a soaking tub-equipped master bathroom with a lake view.
Ussery single-handedly completed the renovation, living in her unique home from 1995 to 1999 before converting it into a public museum. Unfortunately, the plane was destroyed during transport, but its legacy lives on through these captivating photos.
Ussery’s remarkable story showcases her resourcefulness and creativity, inspiring others to think outside the box when it comes to building their dream homes.
