A Mother’s Resilience: Raising a Child with Harlequin Ichthyosis

Jennie Wilklow’s pregnancy was smooth until the 34th week, when an emergency C-section brought her daughter, Anna, into the world. At first, everything seemed fine. But moments after her birth, Anna’s skin began to harden and crack, leaving her body covered in sores. The room fell silent as doctors diagnosed her with Harlequin ichthyosis, a rare genetic condition that causes the skin to grow abnormally fast.

Jennie was devastated. “I thought it might be better if she died right then,” she admits. But Anna was a fighter. With the help of her family and medical team, she survived and began to thrive.

Caring for Anna was a full-time job. Jennie spent hours each day bathing her and applying petroleum jelly to her fragile skin. Despite the challenges, Jennie refused to let Anna’s condition define her. “I realized that if I set limitations on her, she would stay within them,” Jennie says. “I decided to set the bar high and let her achieve whatever she wanted.”
