Challenging Norms: A Female Landscaper’s Fight for Equal Rights

Shianne Fox, an Australian landscaper known as “The Bikini Tradie,” has sparked a nationwide debate about gender equality in the workplace. Her question is simple yet provocative: Why can men work shirtless in extreme heat while women cannot?

Fox, who has worked in male-dominated trades for over four years, often wears a bikini top to cope with the intense heat. But during a recent 40-degree Celsius (104-degree Fahrenheit) day, she was told to keep her shirt on while her male colleagues worked shirtless. Frustrated, she took to TikTok to call out what she sees as a double standard.

“It’s sexist, and I’m really over it,” Fox said. “I just want to be topless like the boys—but no, I will ‘distract them.’”

Fox argues that the human body is natural and that her being topless shouldn’t be considered inappropriate or distracting, especially when men are allowed to work shirtless under the same conditions. She believes societal perceptions need to evolve to reflect true gender equality.

Her stance has garnered mixed reactions. Many supporters, including men, have praised her for speaking out, agreeing that workplace dress codes should be equal for all. However, critics argue that dress codes exist to maintain professionalism and that social norms around public toplessness differ for men and women.

Some female tradeswomen have also expressed disapproval, suggesting that Fox’s social media presence—where she often posts in a bikini top—undermines the credibility of women in the industry. “She does not speak for us female tradies,” one commented.

Despite the backlash, Fox remains steadfast in her position. She sees herself as an advocate for women in trades, hoping her outspokenness will encourage more women to enter the field and help close the gender gap. According to a 2023 Deloitte survey, men outnumber women in trade jobs by a ratio of 12 to 1.

Fox’s viral moment raises important questions: Should the focus be on topless equality, or is the real challenge breaking into male-dominated industries? Fox believes standing her ground is essential to changing perceptions and fostering inclusivity.

The debate continues to divide opinions, but one thing is clear: it highlights the broader challenges of achieving gender equality in the workplace and the ongoing discussions about societal norms, professionalism, and individual rights.
